The Penetration of Arabia : A Record of the Development of Western Knowledge Concerning the Arabian Peninsula

Description

The archaeologist D. G. Hogarth (1862-1927) was, when he died, keeper of the Ashmolean Museum and president of the Royal Geographical Society. During the First World War he was acting director of the Arab Bureau in Cairo, where he was instrumental in launching the Arab Revolt, in which T. E. Lawrence, a protege of his, played so prominent a part. This book, published in 1904 as the Hejaz railway was being built, is a summary of earlier explorations in the Arabian peninsula, by both Muslim and European travellers. Hogarth's first visit to Arabia was not made until 1916, when he travelled to Jeddah with GBP10,000 in gold to finance the revolt; this book is instead based on his extensive reading of travel literature, included in a bibliography for each chapter. It is thus interesting for its historiographical analysis as well as a background to Hogarth's subsequent political involvement with the region.

Organized chronologically, the publication traces Pettibon's prolific output of his surfer series, from early small-scale monochrome India ink drawings to numerous examples from the 1990s when the artist introduced color, culminating with his recent large-scale works, some of which were executed directly on a Sign, Sing, And Play! : Fun Signing Activities... download ebook pdf wall. Rounding out the publication is a poetic meditation by the writer Carlo McCormick, which captures the essence of Pettibon's surfing works: "Riddled with enigma, Raymond Pettibon's art speaks little about himself the artist, preferring rather to address more central questions on the nature of self, but he tells us this, 'Some things (sea foam, for instance) cannot be drawn at all, but only surfed,' or again, 'All this must be either surfed or painted.' " The poetry of Horace (born 65 BCE) is richly varied, its focus moving between public and private concerns, urban and rural settings, Stoic and Epicurean thought. In the Satires Horace mocks himself as well as the world. His verse epistles include the Art of Poetry, in which he famously expounds his literary theory.
